Pienaar Brothers Strengthens Its Commitment to Women in Mining
Pienaar Brothers Strengthens Its Commitment to Women in Mining

Across South Africa’s mining sector, women continue to take on increasingly technical, demanding, and leadership-driven roles. As this workforce grows, so does the responsibility of the industry to ensure that women are protected, supported, and equipped with PPE that truly meets their needs. At Pienaar Brothers, we remain deeply committed to advancing this progress by championing proper protection, correct sizing, and the ongoing upliftment of women working in mining environments.

This commitment was recently demonstrated through our participation in two significant Women in Mining events: the Women in Mining 2025 Western Cape Region gathering and the NCMMA Annual SHE Day – Women in Mining PPE Exhibition and Showcase. Both platforms provided meaningful engagement, valuable insights, and a powerful reminder of the essential role that well-designed female-specific PPE plays in creating safer, more inclusive mining environments.

Women in Mining 2025 – Western Cape Region

This event brought together women from across the local mining industry to share best practices, celebrate achievements, and reaffirm the importance of an environment where women thrive rather than merely survive. Pienaar Brothers exhibited alongside leading brands including SiSi Safety Wear, Uvex, Profit, Endurance Workwear, and Rebel Safety Gear, showcasing a full range of women-specific PPE. Our team engaged with attendees on correct sizing, the importance of compliance with South African safety standards, and the latest innovations in protective equipment.

NCMMA Annual SHE Day – WIM PPE Exhibition & Showcase

In the Northern Cape, Pienaar Brothers participated in a unique and interactive showcase involving real female mining employees modelling industry-specific PPE on a runway. With support from SiSi Safety Wear, USP, Titan Workwear, Endurance Workwear, and Rebel Safety Gear, we demonstrated how women should be correctly equipped for the hazards associated with their job roles. Our Northern Cape Branch Manager, Kobus van Deventer, participated as one of the judges, reinforcing our commitment to both safety excellence and meaningful industry engagement.

Key Insights from Both Events

Across both engagements, several consistent themes emerged:
• Fit-for-purpose PPE significantly improves comfort, confidence, and performance for women.
• There is strong and growing demand for female-specific sizing across all PPE categories.
• Correct PPE selection and adherence to South African safety standards remain essential to safety and productivity.
• Empowering women with better access to properly fitted PPE contributes to safer, more equitable workplaces.
• Industry collaboration and open dialogue continue to drive progress in supporting women in mining.

Our Ongoing Commitment

These events reaffirm the importance of championing women’s safety in mining. As the industry evolves, so must the PPE available to the women who keep it moving. Pienaar Brothers remains committed to supplying high-performance, correctly sized, standard-compliant PPE that supports women’s safety, confidence, and growth within the mining sector.

Through collaboration with leading brands, ongoing education, and an active role in industry initiatives, we will continue to promote an environment where women in mining are empowered, protected, and equipped to excel.

EN 511:2006 - DON'T GET LEFT OUT IN THE COLD
When it comes to protecting the hands, one typically looks at heat, chemicals, and cuts as obvious workplace hazards to defend against. But for those working in cold environments, they know all too well that regulating the hand’s temperature and protecting against numbness, loss of sensation, tingling and cold burns is just as important. That’s where the EN 511:2006 standard comes in.

EN 407:2020 – Things are heating up!
There are multiple types of workers, such as welders and those working within foundries and kitchens, to name but a few, that are exposed to thermal risks whilst undertaking their daily job and it is therefore imperative that they are protected against the various degrees of the hazards that they face. Whilst other standards within the hand protection category often require an explanation as to how or why a certain test is conducted to achieve a better understanding, EN 407 is a rather straightforward standard. It is comprised of 6 different tests that essentially test the performance of a glove against heat and/or fire risks.

Working with chemicals and micro-organisms can be very high risk, which is why it is so important to ensure that the wearer has the correct pair of gloves for the job at hand. That’s where EN 374:2016 comes in. The standard rates the performance of a glove against chemical risks and tests its ability to prevent mico-organisms and viruses from entering the glove.
